AFL contracts 2022: Sam Walsh re-signs with Carlton, locked in with Blues until 2026

Carlton have moved swiftly to end any speculation about Sam Walsh’s future confirming the young gun will remain with the club on a huge deal.

Carlton young gun Sam Walsh has locked in his future with the Blues, agreeing to a new four-year with the club.

Walsh, 21, had been one of the highest profile players coming out of contract at the end of this season, but the Blues have moved swiftly to end any speculation about his future.

He told teammates the good news this morning.

The new deal takes the star midfielder through until the end of the 2026 season.

“The decision could not have been easier for me – our club has a clear direction, strong leadership, as a playing group we know what we want to achieve and I want to do everything I possibly can to get us there,” Walsh said.

“From the moment I got drafted this football club has been amazing for me and my family, that includes our members and supporters, I am so grateful for how they’ve embraced me from day one.

“I’ve never taken for granted what it means to pull on that navy blue guernsey, it represents so much to so many people.

“We have a real focus to make Carlton people proud, earn respect back for this football club and everyone we represent, and I am very excited to be part of that, not only this season but for years to come.”

Walsh, who finished fourth in the Brownlow Medal after a sensational 2021 season, said recently he was comfortable where the contract discussions were headed with Carlton.

The Herald Sun revealed late last year that the Blues were well advanced on discussions with the one-time No.1 draft pick and expected to have him signed by the start of the season.

Walsh was recently elevated to co-vice captain with Jacob Weitering in support of solo skipper and looms as a future captain.

Geelong star Patrick Dangerfield said a fortnight ago that he rated Walsh so highly that if he was in charge of the Cats’ list management he would be prepared to give him a $10 million offer over 10 seasons.

Walsh’s four-year deal will see him come out of contract when he is 26, which should set him up for a bumper contract beyond that.

Carlton has managed to secure many of its stars with Cripps agreeing to a new deal last year that takes him through until the end of 2027.

Key forwards Harry McKay and Charlie Curnow come out of contract at the end of next year.

Walsh told the Herald Sun recently: ““I am really happy with where I am with the club and the direction the club is heading. I have got a lot of support here.”

“I am not going to put a time frame on it because then the talk starts. All I can say is that I am more than happy with how it is tracking and I am sure it will take care of itself.”

Cripps added: “If you watch Walshy, the way he attacks the ball and the way he gives to everyone around him, he is a star,” 26-year-old Cripps said. “He will do it (sign the contract) in his own time.”

“These two guys (Walsh and Weitering) ... are going to be great leaders of this footy club.”
