First plays second on Thursday 23 June at the ‘G, but not in the order you would have expected a month ago. Here’s how to watch the match on Kayo and catch up on all the news in the lead-up.

Demons v Lions preview

Due to Melbourne’s last three defeats, the defending premiers are not the top seed heading into their blockbuster clash against Brisbane Lions on Thursday night.

Coinciding with off field controversy which has struck the Demons recently – including question marks over Simon Goodwin’s behaviour and a physical altercation between teammates Steven May and Jake Melksham at a Melbourne restaurant – the Demons lost to Fremantle, Sydney and Collingwood all prior to their bye. Before that sequence they were undefeated.

Now they have lost captain and power ruckman Max Gawn to a syndesmosis injury, set for an extended stint on the sidelines. Opposing captain Dayne Zorko will also miss the blockbuster with a hamstring injury.

May will return against Brisbane. However, the Lions themselves have been up and down with a win-loss record since round nine and are also coming off their bye.

The match-up sees the top two players for centre clearances – Clayton Oliver (103) and Brisbane’s Lachie Neale (98) – go toe-to-toe in the centre of the ground. Brisbane have Joe Daniher back on deck returning from a shoulder injury in his side’s win over St Kilda at home just before the bye.
