The 29-year-old won the Cairns ITF after a six month hiatus, which halved his ranking from 1521st to its current 739th.

"Last time (in 2016) I didn’t think I was gonna pick up a racquet again, but this time around I had an idea of what I wanted to do and how I wanted to do it, and I set out, put a plan in place with my team, and we went to work."

The former No.125 underwent elbow surgery in April following the discovery of loose bone during the Indian Wells-Miami Sunshine Double’s tournament.

His victory in Cairns helped to kickstart that necessary part of the recovery with the top 100 and a Davis Cup encore on the horizon.

"Going into the surgery I was very sceptical how I was gonna come back. But it’s really made me realise how much I want to have a really good crack at tennis and get to where I want to get to in this sport."
