The next generation of Top End footballers will get to see their heroes run out on to TIO Stadium once again as the AFLW Dreamtime match returns to Darwin.
Essendon and Richmond fought out a thrilling draw last year in the return of the AFLW and have solidified their commitment to the region in this match.
The sides have already left their mark heading into schools and interacting with the community since arriving.
Territorians Emma Stark and Cooper Ranie will also get to take part, both umpiring the spectacle that takes off at 6.45pm Friday.
Head of AFLNT Sam Gibson said he was thrilled to be hosting the AFLW Dreamtime game in Darwin once again after the success in 2024.
“Last year’s game was a thrilling contest between Richmond and Essendon ultimately ending in a draw and was one of the most attended games of the season,” he said.
“Matches like this are more than just about football, they’re about inspiring the next generation, and it’s well noted that growth in women’s football has been massive over the past five years.
“It’s important for our young Territorians, especially for those in our Indigenous programs, to be able to see role models here in their backyard and to see the pathways in front of them.
“I want to acknowledge Essendon and Richmond for their commitment to Territory football and for bringing this game back to Darwin this year.”
Essendon captain Bonnie Toogood will not feature in the match after picking up a two-match suspension for a dumping tackle against West Coast.
However, she was eager to see her side take on the challenge at TIO Stadium and had enjoyed getting out into the community on the Darwin visit.
“It was fabulous, the ability to go and connect with community goes a long way when we go into schools and are able to inspire kids,” she said.
“We don’t what that impact is going to be in 20 years’ time they can say they’ve met us and that stuff is super important and we’re very privileged to be in that position to inspire the next generation.”
Richmond captain Katie Brennan was equally excited to be back in Darwin for a match her side were targeting after the draw the year before.

“It’s an absolute pleasure to be back here in the Top End, it’s definitely one everyone circles on the calendar,” Brennan said.
“Everyone’s up here in Darwin and it’s certainly the game of the season by way of everyone wanting to be here and be involved.
“We’re stoked to be here and we know how important is for the AFLW to be here in the community and show what’s possible for all these young people growing up.”
