Every sporting instant is a culmination of strategy, psychology, mind-setting and resetting, history and storytelling.
Weeks, months, sometimes years of analysis, coaching, advice and mental conditioning take to the field in their heads as well.
Sometimes, it’s their toughest opponent. That’s why the great stories of sport lie way beyond the scoreboard or the headlines.
They lie in the head games behind the headlines. The how and the why.
The drivers, the inspiration, the mental toughness, the game being played in their mind, the ‘what was she thinking’ explained.
This is what true lovers of sport want to know more about.
A deeper, more intellectual view of what drives the athlete. A place for those who love the story of the moment as much as the moment itself.
CODE Sports is dedicated to going deeper on sports coverage, from breaking news to in-depth interviews. From scores to analysis of the biggest issues affecting your favourite club and game.
CODE is shaking up the world of sport coverage.
Combining stories of depth (minus the ads for subscribers) with breaking sports news, scores, stats, insights, video highlights and podcasts. From big leagues to small. From Australia to New Zealand, US to the UK, India to Europe. In one place. All packed into a website and 4+ star rated app so you can stay informed wherever you are, whenever you want.
Just sport. No politics.
Since launching in late 2021, our journalists remain focused on analysis about the athletes on the park and the decision-makers off it - the people who make the codes we love so compelling.
If you are at the pub talking about it, we are writing it up. So you know more.
If you are on the couch celebrating it, we are publishing about it.
We keep adding new features, like CODE Bet - our new sports betting comparison and analysis arm, the go-to home of story-driven, comprehensive and insightful sport content in Australia.
In CODE Bet you can find stats, results and ladders for the biggest leagues - the AFL, NRL, NBA, NFL, MLB, Premier League and NCAA among them.
We are also expanding, with more journalists in Perth covering the best of Western Australian sport - West Coast, Fremantle, the Fever, Scorchers and WAFL.
Visits our WA Sports page for more.
Here’s a taste of the stories we've told.
In May, Linda Pearce broke the news and led the coverage on the collapse of Collingwood's Super Netball franchise.

When discrimination in Australia’s sports media made headlines in March, 2022, Kelli Underwood wrote for CODE Sports lifting the lid on the experiences of colleagues across the industry. It was an important story that demanded truths to be told.
Specialist view of sport
Pro athlete contributors are helping CODE Sports stay true to the ethos of going beyond the results.
Former Australian star Mike Hussey shared deeply personal insights on CODE Sports over the deaths of three of Australian cricket's greats - Shane Warne, Rod Marsh and Andrew Symonds.
Other stars have revealed raw personal stories, taking readers behind the facade of a top athlete’s life - a life most know only from what we see on match broadcasts.
Nat Medhurst revealed the emotional rollercoaster of representing her nation, from getting dropped by the Diamonds by phone, battling silently with mental health through a marriage breakdown, pregnancy and parenthood amid the demands of being at the top of her sport.
"On the court there were the highs of World Cup wins and domestic premiership success and the lows of the Delhi Commonwealth Games; the joy of my first Diamonds selection to the despair of being brutally dropped from the Aussie team over the phone; the excitement of playing at new clubs but being blindsided by others. Off the court I struggled silently with my mental health for a number of years. I experienced a marriage breakdown followed by my greatest relationship and biggest love. I went through fertility treatment and fell pregnant while feeling obsolete and an outcast all in one fell swoop."
Australian tennis hero Ash Barty joined CODE Sports as a contributor, taking our readers exclusively to central Australia in the wake of her Australian Open triumph. When Ash stunned the world by retiring from tennis at No.1, she turned to CODE to share her first written explanation.
CODE Sports recruited West Coast premiership player Will Schofield for an insider’s view on the Eagles, Dockers and WA sport. Will shared insights into life as a pro footballer, including playing on Lance Franklin as Buddy approached his 1000th goal. He also talked with former teammate Lewis Jetta, chronicling his battle with depression.
A global view
CODE Sports taps into the love of global sport, particularly Aussies dominating the world stage.
Like Aussie Ange Postecoglou winning the treble with Celtic and taking the Premier League by storm at Tottenham.
Or when Chris Anstey took us on the incredible journey to Australia's basketball immortality in Tokyo.
CODE Sports also published stories that were less well known but utterly compelling. Like the two-part series on the cold case murder of the first Australian to play in the NFL.
Part 1 >> Colin Ridgway: the cold case murder of a footy player turned Olympian turned Dallas Cowboy
There have been many superb stories for anyone who simply loves sport.
Such as Roy Keane discussing his iconic career and life post-football in ‘The price of being Roy Keane’.
"I say for a laugh, ‘Kids, if we split up who would you go with?’ And they are all, ‘I’m not going with you anyway. We don’t even want to go on the ferry with ya!’ Brilliant. “And I’m going, ‘I don’t want ye anyway, I’ll take the dogs.’ I look over and the dogs are shaking their heads. No."
Local sport, a new view
Melbourne’s Paul Amy - a staple of local sports journalism - is delivering immersive storytelling at all levels of the game; great stories transcend postcodes.
Like his piece on high-flying country footy star Saad Saad.
Or his piece on Sir Garfield Sobers coaching suburban cricket in Melbourne.
But it’s not just sports journalism with depth.
