Jordan Membrey of Collingwood keen on move to Gold Coast in AFLW trade flurry
Moves around AFLW ramped up on Thursday, with several clubs involved. And Collingwood isn’t done yet, DANIEL CHERNY reports.
Collingwood could lose another AFLW player to an opposition club, with forward Jordan Membrey eyeing a move to Gold Coast.
Membrey, 27, is keen to return to her home state of Queensland after 23 games in four years for the Magpies.
Having started her career at the Brisbane Lions – playing in the 2017 grand final loss to Adelaide – Membrey moved to the Pies, topping the club’s goalkicking and gaining a reputation as one of the league’s most accurate shots for goal.
She missed all of season six following a knee reconstruction but returned to play 10 matches in season seven before being dropped for the finals.
The Suns have interested in Membrey, who would help fill the void left by Courtney Jones’ departure for Richmond.
Collingwood has lost high-profile trio Chloe Molloy (Sydney) and Jaimee Lambert and Steph Chiocci (both St Kilda), gaining Saint Tarni White and North Melbourne’s Grace Campbell.
Gold Coast gained Maddy Brancatisano from the Tigers in the moves for Jones.
In completed trades on Thursday, Fremantle traded Tahlia Read to Carlton for Serena Gibbs, Port Adelaide shifted Kate Surman to Geelong for Maddy Keryk and pick 12, and Eliza Shannon moved from Hawthorn to North Melbourne for an exchange of later picks.
“Eliza made a promising start to her AFLW career at Hawthorn with some strong performances in the backline, as well as a terrific season in the VFLW in 2022,” said North AFLW chief Rhys Harwood.
“We were impressed with Eliza’s ability to cover the ground as a defender, as well as her versatility. At 174cm and with her running ability, we feel her traits will translate well to our system through a few different roles.
“Eliza is another player who will bring both strong athletic qualities and football IQ to the team, and we believe she has scope to develop her game really quickly. She is also a great person who we think will fit in well at the club.”
