Carlton backman John Lloyd passes away after cancer battle

Essendon great Matthew Lloyd and his family are mourning the loss of their beloved father John.
John, who played 29 games for Carlton over three seasons from 1965 to 1967, passed away on Wednesday after a battle with cancer. He was 77.
Eddie McGuire announced the news on Footy Classified to explain Lloyd’s absence from the show.
“It’s with the deepest of sympathies to the Lloyd family that we say John Lloyd the patriarch of this magnificent family and former Carlton player passed away after a long battle with cancer today,” he said.
“To Matthew, to his mum Bev and most importantly to his brothers and sisters, to Brad who’s a great servant of football down at Carlton, to Simon at Geelong and to Kylie who’s been our colleague here at the Nine network, doing a lot of finances here behind the scenes of all our footy shows for 20-odd, 25 years or so.
“I can’t think of a family that have actually given more to football and John was a wonderful man and he passed away this afternoon. So on behalf of everybody here at the Nine network and in football in general our condolences to the Lloyd family.”
John was recruited to Carlton from Yarrawonga and wore the No.18 jumper when he played as a crafty defender – the same number Matthew went on to make famous at the Bombers during his illustrious 270 game and 926 goal career from 1995-2009.

Lloyd said he idolised his father and always wanted to play for Carlton, but the 20-game father-son rule changed.

In an article he penned in 2015 he wrote: “I grew up wanting to play for Carlton. Yes that’s right, the Carlton Football Club.
“From the day I was old enough to kick a football around, my dream was to follow in the footsteps of my father, John, and wear the number 18 jumper for Carlton, as he did on 29 occasions under Ron Barassi between 1965 and 1967.
“I grew up watching my two older brothers, Simon and Brad, play for the Carlton under 19s, because of the 20-game father-son rule that was in place through the early nineties. I couldn’t wait to do the same once I was old enough.”
