Hawthorn captain James Sicily has revealed forward Jack Ginnivan told Hawks leaders he wished he didn’t post that Instagram comment
James Sicily defended teammate Jack Ginnivan on the field on Friday night and he’s done it again off it. But he did reveal one thing the provocative forward told the group during the week.
Hawthorn captain James Sicily says Jack Ginnivan told the Hawks leaders that he wished that he had not posted his now infamous Instagram comment but he doesn’t regret flying the flag for his teammate against Port Adelaide senior coach Ken Hinkley “one bit really”.
Sicily and Hinkley clashed minutes after the final siren following the Power’s thrilling three-point win over the Hawks on Friday night when the Port senior coach made a mocking plane gesture towards Ginnivan.
This was in response to Ginnivan commenting on former teammate Brodie Grundy’s Instagram post that he would “see you in 14 days” in an SCG preliminary final, with Hinkley suggesting the star Hawk was not flying to Sydney.
After acknowledging he was in the wrong post-game, Hinkley said the Power had made reference of Ginnivan’s comment with the club feeling “disrespected” by it.
Sicily revealed that Ginnivan had conceded that he wished he didn’t post the comment, but said that too many people were “infatuated” with the small forward’s life and it was a “bit embarrassing”.
“I haven’t spoken to Jack this morning but he is a pretty resilient character hey?” Sicily said.
“He has dealt with a lot of crap, some of it self-induced but we love Jack and what he has brought to our team this year and the other thing that I am really proud of is that people can come into our club and be who they want to be and there’s a great sense of belonging in that.
“We love Jack and what he brings, he is a bit of a smart-alec but that’s footy – it is a game at the end of the day.
“It was cheeky, I don’t think the game was lost or won on motivation because of it. It wasn’t necessarily a direct attack on Ken or Port Adelaide.
“Jack openly admitted to us during the week that he really wished he didn’t do it but it is all part of learning.

“People forget that he is 21, a lot of grown men are infatuated with the way he lives his life which sometimes feels a bit embarrassing. People are different and we shouldn’t be judgmental when it comes to that stuff.
“It is part of Australian culture to bring people down… but as I said before we love Jack.”
