A club first will be made at Glenorchy on Friday night when the daughter of a Magpies legend joins her father in an illustrious class of players.

While notching up game 100 was already going to be a proud moment for Glenorchy playing-coach Brie Barwick, the added significance of joining her dad Peter as the Magpies first father-daughter life members’ means Friday’s milestone match will be one to remember.

The first-year coach notches up the long awaited milestone against Clarence at KGV some seven years since making her debut with Barwick packing plenty of team and individual accolades into what’s become an impressive career to date.

Two premierships, multiple team of the year selections and a club best and fairest before she turns 25 means she will leave the Magpies as one of the club’s best ever female players.

But it’s the combined milestone of playing game 100 and joining her dad as a Glenorchy life member that the 24 year-old says is one that ranks right next to those.

“Glenorchy really has been that home away from home and I’ve created such a great family, great mates at this club, so to now be rewarded with that achievement of life membership is just an added little bonus on all the fantastic memories I’ve had here so far,” Barwick said.

“Not many fathers and sons can say they’ve both achieved life membership so for myself to now join Dad is a really massive highlight of my life and puts things into perspective on how special football can be.”

A former club best and fairest winner in his own right, Peter is also the Magpies current president and praised his eldest daughter’s ability to juggle both playing and coaching with parenthood after becoming a mum to Oakley and missing the 2022 season.

“I’m incredibly proud,” he said.

“To see her where she started to where she is now and her development, not only as a person but as a footballer, is incredibly joyful as a parent to watch. For her to come back this year and not only return to playing after becoming a mum but to step up and take on the coaching is a real credit to her and she’s performed well beyond any expectations.”

While some players may return following time away as a shell of their former self, Barwick has been the complete opposite with her 2024 campaign likely to go down as one of the best of her career.

Playing every game this season in the SFLW competition, Barwick was also named MVP of the Women’s All-Stars Series and forced her way into Tasmania’s representative side against both Queensland and NSW/ACT.

And while she may have stepped into a role as coach a lot earlier than she expected, it’s one the incumbent Glenorchy life member says has been one of the best of her young career.

“Taking on that coaching role was something I hadn’t quite seen for myself at this stage in my career, but I’m so happy that I did step up to the challenge because it really has been way more rewarding than I ever could have imagined.”

Barwick will become the fifth female player to be inducted as a Glenorchy life member but will be the first to play all 100 games with the Magpies.
