Playing AFL on Anzac Day for the first time is something Chris Moloney will hold ‘very close’ to his heart on Thursday.

Moloney will line up for the Manunda Hawks when they take on the Cairns Saints for the first time these two clubs will line up on Anzac Day.

The Hawks forward’s great grandfather served for Australia during World War I and Moloney said it was a privilege to represent him this way.

“He doesn’t really talk about what happened during the war which I think we can all understand why,” Moloney said.

“But he does sort of talk about the friendships he made and life long friends he made.

“It is going to be something very special to be able to run out there in what will be my first time playing on Anzac Day.

“It is something that will be held very close to my heart knowing I am honouring all the brave men and women who served and are serving for us.”

The Hawks and the Saints will be playing for the ‘Battle of Manunda’ shield for the first time in the competitions history.

With both clubs based in Manunda, the clubs came together with the competition to put the proposal forward.

The shield will be given to the club with the most wins on the day out of the women’s, development’s and senior’s games.

“It will be great to claim the shield for the first year,” Moloney said.

“Getting some bragging rights over the Saints would be pretty handy.

“We know the type of club they are and what they will bring but we are purely just focused on ourselves.

“The club atmosphere is great, the boys can see we are building for something and are working for one another.

“Hopefully we can get a few wins this year, be nice to get the first one this week.”

The Hawks will add former North Melbourne player Eddie Sansbury to their list this Thursday.

Sansbury played 40 games for the Kangaroos from 2004 to 2008.

“It will be great to have him down at the club and learn from Eddie,” Moloney said.

“It is just a different level they bring, the ex-AFL players.

“It does lift everyone to be a bit better, a bit cleaner with the footy.”

Anzac Day clashes between the Hawks and the Saints kicks off with the Development’s at 3:30pm before the women’s then the senior’s.
