Jake Carlisle signs with Moama for next season in Murray league
A former Essendon and St Kilda defender has been named the co-coach of a country footy club desperate to build on the promise of past seasons while also strengthening his connection to the town.
After almost 12 months of trying, Moama has the ex-AFL player it hopes will end a 16-year premiership drought in the Murray league.
The Magpies have signed former Essendon and St Kilda player Jake Carlisle as coach for next year.
He’ll co-coach with Shannon Keam who was player-coach the last time the team triumphed in 2010.
Carlisle joins the club after playing for Wallan during the past two years in the Riddell District league, helping them to make the grand final in 2023.
Moama president Scott Sattler said the move was a homecoming of sorts for the 151-game AFL player.
“His in-laws and family are based here,” he said.
“We were talking to him last year but he’d signed a contract with Wallan.
“He moved here full time in January this year and slowly we just tapped away at him waiting for him to be ready.
“Once he finished his Wallan finals series we sat down seriously and had further chats. We’re just thankful to get his services.
“We look forward to welcoming Jake and hs family to our club.”
Sattler said Carlisle’s main role will be to help develop the youth at the club.
The club, in the past seven years, has produced two AFL players - Lachie Schultz and Jobe Shanahan.
Carlisle’s task is to continue to build on the youth there.
“Jake has a real passion for junior development,” Sattler said.
“He was a really good fit. It’s not just about Jake at all on the field but what he can offer to help our list and develop our kids coming through.
“The playing group will really bond with Jake really quickly.”
Sattler said the time had also come for the club to experience senior premiership success, and both can guide the club there.
“We won the reserves flag this year which was a nice reward but it is not the major one we are looking for,” he said.
“We’re sick of finishing third or fourth. We’ve won the champion club five years in a row but haven’t tasted the ultimate one.
“We’re keen to make it happen.”
