Here at Quick Kicks we look at the lighter side of local footy.

Whether it be a funny exchange, a good stat or an action that’s laughed about after the game — it’s all here.

THE RACE FOR COACHES STARTS

As the end of the local footy season draws closer, the race to sign up senior coaches is only just heating up. And it’s worth keeping an eye on some of those names who might be on their way out of the AFL system as well. One name which caught our eye at Quick Kicks was former Melbourne man Mark Williams. The Port Adelaide premiership coach has been linked with VFL roles but could a return to the suburbs be on the cards?

WHO’S HOME GAME IS IT?

You’d think it’s accepted knowledge when you travel to an opposition ground that you’d be in charge of the scoreboard but it wasn’t the case for one local footy side across the weekend. When they got to the ground, the visiting team was required to put the scores up throughout the day.

NORWOOD FAREWELLS FALLEN POLICE OFFICER

Eastern league club Norwood has been rocked by the death of its former player Neal Thompson, who was killed in the line of duty in the Porepunkah tragedy on Tuesday.

On Thursday afternoon, the club paid tribute to their great mate.

“Thommo was a premiership player with our club in 1999, proudly wearing the number 4 jumper across 17 games that season,” the club said.

“He will be remembered not only for his contribution on the field but also for the friendships and bonds he built with teammates and supporters.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his partner Lisa, his family and friends, and many of the past players who shared the field and changerooms with him.

“Once part of Norwood, always part of Norwood.”

HILLIS GETS TASTE OF GLORY

Devon Meadows champion Joel Hillis would love nothing more than to win a premiership with his beloved Panthers this season. Well, on Tuesday he had a dress rehearsal of sorts when he was assistant coach for Patterson River Secondary College’s Year 7 footy side that won a state title. That’s Joel in the premiership pic, triumphantly raising his finger.

FRAWLEY’S MARVEL WARM-UP BEFORE FINALS

Interesting selection in Thursday night’s AFL Legends Game at Marvel Stadium. Hawthorn premiership player James Frawley is playing — two days before taking his place in Devon Meadows’ crucial first semi-final in the MPFNL on Saturday. We’re told he’s assured the Panthers he will “cruise around’’ and look after himself.
