He’s the son of the man known as ‘The Wizard’ but while his father may be as famous a name as they come at North Hobart, Archie Devine is hoping to create his own on-field magic.
The 16 year-old will notch up his third senior game for the Demons against Clarence on Saturday with the son of club legend Robbie carrying on the Devine legacy made famous by his dad during North’s glory years.
A premiership player, best and fairest winner and multiple time club leading goal kicker, Devine senior dominated Tasmanian football in the early 2000s before retiring in 2010.
While Robbie was known for his exploits inside 50, his eldest son has made a promising start to his senior football career further up the ground.
And while he admits making his debut on the same ground his Dad made famous heightened the nerves, Devine is loving every minute of senior football.
“It was obviously nerve-racking, like a lot of the old supporters came along and watched,” Devine said.
“I felt a little bit of pressure but when I got my hands on the footy, I was a bit relieved and was fine after that.”
Presented his jumper by Robbie ahead of game one, the talented teenager said the message from Dad was a pretty simple one.
“He just spoke about my journey and where I started and how hard I’ve worked,” Devine said.
“Both Dad and ‘Bestie’ (senior coach Adam Bester) have said is just play your role and you’ll be right, which I feel like I’ve been doing.”
As proud a father as they come, Robbie said it seeing Archie run out was a special feeling with the club a second home to his family.
“I’m very proud. To see how much work he’s put in from a young fella, even though he’s still only 16, is amazing,” he said.
“When I presented his jumper, it just brought back so many memories. But, you know, he played most of his juniors at Lindisfarne, then came across to North Hobart. And just to have him back home is fantastic.”
Devine has averaged 10 disposals, three tackles and three goal involvements across his first two games with the young gun also a member of the Tasmania Devils squad.
