Planning is well-advanced for the next stage of Tasmanian football with rosters for the new-look regional competitions to be released by Christmas and the state’s elite senior academy teams set to play five representative games in 2025.

The end of the Tasmanian State League when the final siren sounded on the 2024 TSL grand final at UTas Stadium on Saturday heralded the transition to the regional restructure.

AFL Tasmania boss Damian Gill said the final touches were being put on the south and northern regional competitions as discussions with existing leagues and clubs continued.

“We are moving into the Premier League model with the three regional competitions, working on with the NTFA, NWFL and SFL on that,” Gill said.

“That is progressing well with all clubs involved.

“It’s the end of an era and the start of an exciting new journey for Tassie footy with the VFL and AFL just around the corner.”

Gill said preparations for the new order had been “progressing for months”.

“Some of the fixture-planning is under way and we would expect to have that [fixtures] out by Christmas,” he said.

“There are also representative games to take into account, so there’s a lot that comes into it.

“It’s going to be exciting next year.

“We are going to have Premier Leagues, regional rep footy for bragging rights between the regions, and we’ll have the senior state academy, which will play against VFL teams as well as others states in preparation for the VFL and VFLW the year after.

“We are getting really excited about that next year looks like.”

Gill is confident the new senior talent academies unveiled in July as part of a major system restructure will help convince players to stay in Tasmania ahead of the state’s VFL entry in 2026.

North Launceston’s 20-point grand final win over Lauderdale _one of the best showdowns in TSL history _ was seen as a fitting send-off for the state’s top competition.

“It was a fitting finale between two of the fiercest rivals across the journey of the TSL _ the battle of the Bombers,” Gill said.

“It was a cracking contest and a good celebration, not just this season but for the 16 years of the TSL.

“Lauderdale had such good support, their people got right behind them, and although they didn’t take the chocolates they’ve got a lot to be proud of.”
