Andrew and Jason Moloney eye off high-profile George Kambosos-Devin Haney undercard berths
The undercard for George Kambosos’ unified world title defence – arguably the biggest boxing event in Australian history – is starting to take shape. And the Moloney brothers Jason and Andrew want in.
The undercard for lightweight kingpin George Kambosos’ unified world title defence against Devin Haney is starting to take shape, with brothers Jason and Andrew Moloney both hoping to secure high-profile bouts on the blockbuster card.
Kambosos will embark on his first title defence against slick American Haney at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne on Sunday, June 5, in what shapes as arguably the biggest boxing event in Australian history.
And the Moloneys want in.
Both Moloney brothers are in action this weekend in Los Angeles, but wins on the undercard of unified super-featherweight world champion Mikaela Mayer’s showdown with Jennifer Han will put them each in position to fight for world titles in their respective divisions later in the year.
Top Rank’s Bob Arum, who is co-promoting the event, wants the Moloneys on the card too.
Jason was stopped by dominant bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue in 2020 before bouncing back with a classy win over Joshua Greer last August.
A win over Mexican Francisco Pedroza (17-10-2) this weekend will likely see him earn a world title eliminator, which could lead to a bout with the winner of Inoue-Donaire 2.
“I’m hoping to get a good impressive win (this weekend), then get a world title eliminator with the WBC on June 5 on the Kambosos-Haney show at Marvel Stadium,” Jason Moloney told CodeSports from his training base in Las Vegas.
“This is a big fight for me. If I get past this one this weekend, I’ll be back in action eight weeks later on June 5 in a world title eliminator.
“Two days after June 5, Inoue and (Nonito) Donaire will fight. I should be in the mandatory position to fight the winner of that fight.”
Andrew, a super flyweight, most recently earned a unanimous decision win over Froilan Saludar in Sydney in December, following on from his rollercoaster trilogy against Joshua Franco.
Currently ranked inside the top 10 with the WBA, WBO, WBC and The Ring, Andrew says an impressive performance against Gilberto Mendoza (19-11-3) this weekend will see him in with a chance of making another run at a world title.
“I’m hoping after this fight I can move up again in the rankings, and hopefully then we can get some sort of eliminator for my next fight against someone else in the top five and make myself mandatory to fight for the world title,” he told CodeSports.
“That’s what I’m hanging to get to. I want the opportunity to fight the top fighters in my division. There’s so many good fighters at super-flyweight.
“I just want the opportunity to fight these guys and I truly believe with how I’m progressing, I’m ready to fight for a world title again.
“I’m ready to become world champion.”
After two defeats and a controversial no-contest against Franco, Andrew says he’s now entering the second phase of his career and wants to atone for the only two loses of his professional career.
“I feel like I’ve gone to a whole new level over the last few months, and I’m just excited to get back in the ring and show that,” he said. “I feel like I’ve gotta redeem myself after most of the people over here saw me have two losses.
“I just really want to redeem myself and show what I’m really all about.”
Melbourne born and raised, Jason and Andrew both say fights on the Kambosos-Haney undercard will be a welcome homecoming after two-and-a-half years fighting overseas.
“The prize for this weekend, after performing well and getting a good win, is getting on that card,” Andrew said.
“It’s something I’m really excited about. It’ll be a massive card – arguably the biggest in Australian history – so hopefully I can get on that and fight against one of the top guys in the division.
“It’ll be a homecoming fight in front of my friends and family who haven’t seen me fight in so long.”
Jason added: “It’s so good to have a mega-fight like that back home in Australia.
“It’s incredible to have a fight like that in Melbourne, and to be a part of that will be awesome.
“To get that homecoming fight in front of my friends and family and everyone who’s supported me from day one, and to have a big fight like a world title eliminator and have the home crowd cheering me on will make it even more special.”
