Tim Tszyu vows to end bout with Carlos Ocampo in five rounds

Australian boxer Tim Tszyu has revealed where his mind is at after a dog bite scare and how he sees his upcoming Glitter Strip fight going. Step inside his Gold Coast training camp.

After revealing the scars left behind by a vicious dog attack, a “possessed” Tim Tszyu says he will beat Mexico’s Carlos Ocampo within five rounds to take a step closer to meeting undisputed super-welterweight champion Jermell Charlo in the ring.

Tszyu was attacked by a friend’s pit bull two weeks ago but said the public needed to forget about the dog bite that left him needing 26 stitches in his right arm.

Tszyu has been on the Gold Coast for a week undergoing final preparations for Sunday’s bout with Mexico’s Carlos Ocampo where he will defend his interim WBO super-welterweight title at the Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre.

The man who joked on Tuesday he had “been fighting pit bulls” to prepare says the public needs to forget about the dog bite that left him needing 26 stitches in his arm as he turns his attention to getting past Ocampo ahead of his forecast title challenge against Charlo later this year.

“Every (fight) camp you are presented with big challenges,” Tszyu said prior to a training session on the Gold Coast at Burleigh Heads’ Sanctum Forge Boxing Gym.

“This wasn’t ideal but a day after (the bite) I was sweet.

“At the time it was a bit nerve-racking and we move on. Now it is about the fight.

“I could have gone the easy path and said I’m going to take time off and rest but that isn’t me.

“I’m motivated and I feel like I have got this.

“I feel possessed in a certain way.”

Tszyu said Charlo remained the biggest target of his career so far.

“I still want the name Charlo as my number one priority,” Tszyu said.

“That is the name I want on my resume.

“Like you play in video games there is a big boss and you have got to get rid of all the little bosses on the way.”

The Australian said every fight was now about making a statement to the world.

“It’s going to be a tough fight I know that,” he said of Ocampo.

“He is a never-back-down fighter who is hard to get rid of. But I believe in myself. The opportunity will come.

“Every fight I go into now is definitely a statement-type fight.

“Not just for everyone but more for myself, to keep proving to myself I’m the best in the division and to keep trying to prove it to the other boys and let them all know I’m coming.

“The motivation (to fight) keeps getting bigger and bigger because the prize keeps getting bigger.

“The responsibility is getting bigger as well.”

Tszyu and Ocampo are scheduled for 12 rounds on Sunday, headlining a seven-bout card. It is being broadcast live on Foxtel’s Main Event, Kayo Sports in Australia and Showing in the US.

Ringside seats have sold for up to $3000 for the fight.
