Greg Chappell hails emergence of Travis Head, reveals how he won him over
A Test great has praised the emergence of Travis Head as one of the world’s most damaging batters, revealing what other players must learn from Australia’s No.5.
Greg Chappell has reinforced his view Travis Head is the most improved batsman in the world and urged fellow players and coaches to learn from his mindset.
In his latest book released this week, The Chappell Chronicles, Test great Chappell has published a series of his new, old and remodelled opinions and admitted Head had won him over after a period when he was uncertain about his talent.
Australia’s cricket selectors have a long time fondness for Head and feel the decision to drop him from the Cricket Australia contract list five years ago proved the burr on his saddle that roused him to great heights.
He has since proved a consistent matchwinner in big games and Chappell has said his “free’’ mindset in a game known for its mental challenges was the key.
“I had my doubts about him in the early days because of his troubles against the moving ball, but he has blown me away with the diligence and courage that he has shown in his
transformation,’’ Chappell wrote.
“He has simplified the complexities of cricket, choosing to play the game in the simplest of ways rather than falling into the trap of overthinking or batting for survival. For me, Head is the most improved batter in world cricket in the past three years.

“Head prioritises intent over caution, a mindset that allows him to approach every ball with the aim of scoring runs. By getting into good positions to score, Head simultaneously positions himself to defend the better deliveries. It’s a virtuous cycle that rewards his positive intent and makes his game devastatingly effective.
“Batsmen who purely bat for survival often engage their conscious mind too much, leading to clunky movements and slow decision-making. Intent – as Head demonstrates – is the driving force behind a focused and resilient mental state.
“Travis Head’s journey offers valuable lessons for players and coaches alike. His rise highlights the importance of simplifying the game, focusing on intent and being instinctive.’’
