Just three weeks after suffering his 11th concussion, Will Pucovski has been cleared to make his return to competitive cricket.

The batting young gun, whose extremely promising one-Test career has been cruelled by repeated head blows, has been named to play for Melbourne in a Premier Cricket clash at the Albert Ground against Geelong on Saturday.

CODE can reveal Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia medicos have ticked off the 24-year-old’s return to play club cricket. A timeline on his comeback to state and potentially international cricket is yet to be mapped out.

Pucovski, who played his lone Test last summer against India, suffered a head knock at training before the start of Victoria’s Sheffield Shield campaign this season, ruling him out of Test calculations for the Ashes.

He had been keen to gain inclusion for the tour of Pakistan and returned to the Shield last month, making a first innings half-century against South Australia at Adelaide Oval.

But he suffered a blow to the head from a volleyball in the lead-up to day four and was substituted out of the match.

That led to renewed calls for Pucovski, who has also dealt with mental health issues, to retire, however the youngster is determined to play on.

Forecast rain in Melbourne on Saturday could however delay his return.

“There‘s conversations that are happening in the background. Will’s indicated that he wants to keep playing, so we just have to weigh up everything that’s happening at the moment,” Victorian coach Chris Rogers said on SEN radio late last month.

“I think he’s pretty hopeful, we just have to have those conversations and make sure that everything’s okay. I’m sure that that’ll play out.”

Victoria still have two Shield matches and potentially a final remaining in their season.
