Football Victoria has launched an investigation after flares and projectiles were hurled onto the pitch during a crucial NPL preliminary final match.

Flares at NPL preliminary final

A NPL Victoria preliminary final descended into chaos on Friday night with flares and projectiles lobbed on to the pitch during the match between Heidelberg United FC and Preston Lions.

Football Victoria has condemned the disgraceful behaviour and launched an investigation.

While Preston Lions released a statement saying it is “extremely disappointed” with fans’ behaviour and would be working with police and Football Victoria to identify those responsible.

“To the Preston Lions supporters who came to the game last night, we want to inform you that we were completely blindsided by the fenced cages in the away section of Olympic Village that greeted all of us on arrival,” the statement read.

“Despite a sit-down meeting between Preston, Heidelberg and Football Victoria and then regular dialogue during the week in the lead up to the match, these measures were disrespectful and provocative and contradicted the agreed match-day plan and venue map.

“That said, the club is extremely disappointed and strongly condemns the behaviour that followed during the game by sections of our supporters.

“We will be working with Football Victoria and Victoria Police during the week to identify the individuals in our section who took part in this inappropriate behaviour, who following the investigations, will be dealt with accordingly.

“The club has worked hard over many years to deliver a safe and enjoyable match day experience and will not tolerate a limited number of individuals ruining the experience for the majority of our loyal, passionate and respectful supporters.”

The incident started Heidelberg United FC player Bul Juach scored from the penalty spot in the 45th minute of the first half.

Flares were seen flying from the Preston away area on to the pitch – towards the players.

And can then be seen being set off on the sidelines. And it happened again in the 83rd minute when Preston scored its only goal of the night.

Juach wasn’t supposed to run to the Preston side when celebrating his penalty goal.

Players had been warned against provoking the away fans.

Heidelberg coach John Anastasiadis apologised to Preston counterpart Louis Acevski after the incident and the team was reminded not to provoke the away fans.

It is not the first time Preston Lions fans have caused trouble this season. In June they were accused of racist behaviour and just last week caused issues when the faced Oakley’s Cannons, causing damage to the stands, littering and putting racist stickers in areas.

Fans from the opposing sides had been separated by temporary fencing but it did little to keep the peace.

There was no official crowd number but it is estimated more than 5000 attended the clash.

“Tonight’s NPL Victoria Preliminary Final between Heidelberg United FC and Preston Lions FC should have been a highlight of the 2025 season, with two proud clubs competing for a place in the Grand Final,” Football Victoria said in a statement.

“While the football on the pitch lived up to all expectations, the behaviour of a small minority of attendees off it, was utterly unacceptable.

“Flares, projectiles and abusive conduct created an unsafe environment for spectators and players alike.

“This behaviour was disgraceful.

“The wider football community has resoundingly condemned these acts and demanded action. There is no place for this in our game.

Football Victoria will not tolerate anti-social behaviour infiltrating what should be a celebratory occasion for all fans, including families and children.”

Fans were quick to condemn the behaviour on social media with some calling for financial penalties and points deductions for the Preston Lions next season.

“It was beyond stupid behaviour and very disappointing to see given how Preston has worked in previous years to try and stomp this behaviour out,” one fan shared on X.

Another said it shouldn’t be tolerated.

“Action was needed. And swiftly so. There’s no excuse for that fan behaviour. It’s looks bad on the club, the competition and the image of football in Australia.”

Heidelberg United went on to win the match 2-1 and progress to the final.

Football Victoria has called for anyone with information, video footage or photos of the incident to send it to discipline@footballvictoria.com.au.
