Liverpool rocked by Galatasaray after 1am fireworks, Mbappe runs riot for Madrid
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WRAP: Woken up by fireworks in the middle of the night, Liverpool’s visit to Turkey got even worse as they suffered an upset defeat to Galatasaray.
Having set off fireworks outside Liverpool’s team hotel in the middle of the night, Galatasaray fans were celebrating by fulltime after a famous Champions League win over the Premier League giants on Tuesday (local).
Underdogs heading into the match, Galatasaray took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute after being awarded a penalty, with Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai ruled to have fouled Barış Alper Yılmaz in the box.
The Turkish side held on from there, and had more than one opportunity to increase their lead.
It is Liverpool’s second loss in a row across all competitions, having gone down by the same score in the Premier League to Crystal Palace over the weekend.

Elsewhere, Tottenham came from two goals behind to scrape a 2-2 draw away to Norwegian side FK Bodø/Glimt, and Chelsea beat Benfica 1-0 at home.
Atletico Madrid thumped Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 at home, while Bayern Muninch did the same to Pafos away.
Serie A sides Atalanta and Inter Milan both enjoyed wins at home over Club Brugge and Slavia Praha respectively, a France’s Marseille beat Ajax 4-0.
Kylian Mbappe struck a hat-trick as record 15-time Champions League winners Real Madrid romped to a 5-0 league phase win over Kairat in Kazakhstan.
Xabi Alonso’s side bounced back from their thrashing by city rivals Atletico Madrid on Saturday with an emphatic victory on the road, after travelling more than 7,000 kilometres.
Mbappe put the hosts to the sword with his treble and Eduardo Camavinga and Brahim Diaz wrapped up Madrid’s victory, which took them provisionally top of the table.
Kairat, appearing in the tournament proper for the first time, beat Celtic in qualifying but could not handle Los Blancos, even after their long journey east, in particular French superstar Mbappe.
“We can’t forget what happened this weekend (against Atletico) but we have to keep thinking about it, and working to be better each day and each week so we don’t have another night like that,” Mbappe told Movistar.
The forward boasts 13 goals already this season in nine games across all competitions, but looked frustrated with himself when he missed a good chance in the second half.
“My work is helping the team, doing what I can so that the team wins,” continued Mbappe.
“If I have five chances, and I want to score five goals then I have to score five goals, that’s why Real Madrid bought me.
“I’ll work to be better and try to score more goals and be more efficient in front of goal.”
