Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis announce engagement
The rumours are true — Sam Kerr is engaged. The Matildas captain’s exciting news has been confirmed by her long-time girlfriend Kristie Mewis.
Matildas superstar Sam Kerr is engaged after her long time American football girlfriend Kristie Mewis confirmed the long-running rumours the duo had taken their relationship to the next level.
There has been speculation the power couple were engaged since September when Mewis posted a photo of herself sporting a big gold ring on her finger.
Mewis confirmed the news in an interview with US People calling Kerr her “biggest supporter”.
“My biggest supporter, always listening to me nag and complain all, all of my crazy antics,” Mewis says.
Their not so secret announcement was not dissimilar to the way the couple first announced they were an item following the Tokyo Olympics.
They went head to head in the bronze medal match with Mewis’ team claiming the win.
After the game the duo sat on the field together and shared a hug.
They confirmed they were together just a few days later via an Instagram post.
With superstar Kerr playing for Chelsea in England and Mewis in the US competition their time together is limited.
Kerr is understood to be off contract with Chelsea at the end of the season and with longtime manager Emma Hayes departing for the US national team and Mewis based there, Kerr could be primed to make a return to the competition that helped build her name.
Kerr has played for several US clubs including Mewis’ Gotham FC.
She won multiple golden boot awards while playing in the NWSL.

Kerr has said in a previous interview that the key to their long distance relationship has been the support each has towards the other’s footballing ambitions.
“I think the thing that keeps us going is that we can see an end point,” Kerr said.
“We both just want each other to do so well in our careers. I don’t think you could be in a long distance relationship with someone who didn’t get the sport. She fully gets it and I get it. So we just support each other.”
