Another Bjorn Baker boilover? Trainer keen to take up the Invitation with Stefi Magnetica, Monte Supreme

Bjorn Baker won last year’s Group 2 The Invitation with an outsider but there’d be no surprise if either Stefi Magnetica or Monte Supreme saluted on Saturday.

Out The Gate - Cox Plate Day

Bjorn Baker won last year’s Group 2 $2m The Invitation (1400m) with an outsider but there’d be no surprise if either Stefi Magnetica or Monte Supreme saluted at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

Belclare ran her rivals ragged to salute as a $26 chance in the fillies and mares feature 12 months ago.

Multiple Group 1-winner Stefi Magnetica will lead Baker’s assault this time around.

Baker was forced to reshape Stefi Magnetica’s preparation following a setback, giving the star mare a trial last week to keep her up to the mark.

The gun daughter of All Too Hard can add to her Doncaster Mile success in April as a $7 chance in The Invitation.

“I think she’s got a good gate on Saturday, her work has been great and her trial was good so we are happy with her,” Baker said.

“It’s a big race and we want to be competitive, and right there, and we will definitely be there for her to try and run up to her best.

“I think she is well up to the mark and fit enough to run well. She performs well at the 1400m and she is a great.”

Baker is open to backing up Stefi Magnetica at Flemington in the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) next Saturday, while a date with the Group 1 Champions Mile the following week is also an option.

Stefi Magnetica finished second in the latter of those races last year.

Monte Supreme has been a revelation since joining Baker’s yard at the beginning of this preparation with a winning hat-trick at her first three starts for the trainer.

She earned a crack at The Invitation with a fast-finishing second to Gangsta Granny in the Group 3 The Nivison last start.

“She is a lovely big mare and came to us in good order, sound and well,” Baker said.

“She is exciting and has a great turn of foot so we will ride her to finish off.

“If she has any sort of luck, she is definitely not out of it because she is a high class mare.”
