What is a Melbourne Cup sweep and how does it work?
– Punters bet a fixed wager into a betting pool (typically $1-$10, unless your office takes its punting seriously).
– In return, the punter gets a ticket with the number and name of a horse. The ticket can be drawn or handed out randomly by the sweep organiser.
– After the race, the betting pool is divided among punters with tickets for the winning horses. First place typically gets about half the prize pool, with sliding payouts for second and third (and fourth, and perhaps last, depending on the rules of your organiser).
