Swiftfalcon thrust his name to top of the list for a Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes tilt following a dominant return to Sydney at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

The Michael, John and Wayne Hawkes-trained gelding remained unbeaten this preparation and extended his overall winning run to three with his most impressive performance to date.

Swiftfalcon was a cut above winning the Listed $200,000 Dulcify Stakes (1600m).

A son of the Hawkes’ former Group 1 winning sprinter Exceedance, the three-year-old showed a burst of speed his father would have been proud of to round up his rivals.

He is now a $6 second elect for the Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) in three weeks’ time behind Victorian raider Henlein ($3.50 fav).

“This bloke is untapped,” co-trainer Michael Hawkes said.

“He is still learning and has only had a handful of starts.

“We are just trying to take everything quiet with him and we took the easy option to go to Melbourne with him first-up and bring him back here.

“He’s well on his way.”

Jockey Jay Ford rode a patient race with only a pair of rivals behind Swiftfalcon in the run.

He got the lightly-raced three-year-old to the outside from the top of the straight and wound up strongly.

Swiftfalcon ($4) surged away for a dominant two-and-a-quarter length win from the Richard and Will Freedman-trained Pleasure Artist ($26) with Peter Snowden’s Media World ($6) in third.

“Everything went to plan,” Hawkes said.

“I said to Jay pre-race, just try and get a couple behind you and about the 600m I kept thinking ‘just sit’.

“Jay didn’t get too itchy. He actually rode the perfect race and then he peeled out on the corner and let the horse do the rest.”

Ford piloted Swiftfalcon to a victory at the end of his two-year-old season in July and believes the gelding is continuing on an upward trajectory.

“He is executing really well and he is only getting better and better,” Ford said.

“It was a step up in grade and he handled that quite comfortably and they will step him up again, and he will do the same.”
