Trainer Matt Laurie to weigh up 2025 Cox Plate start for Treasurethe Moment
Trainer Matt Laurie will take his full allotment of time to decide whether Treasurethe Moment runs in the $6m Cox Plate on October 25 following her shock defeat in the Might And Power Stakes.
Trainer Matt Laurie will take his full allotment of time to decide whether Treasurethe Moment runs in the $6m Cox Plate on October 25.
Laurie will assess Treasurethe Moment for at least another week as he mulls over the reasons behind her shock odds-on defeat in Saturday’s Group 1 Might And Power Stakes.
The dual Oaks winner has finished second in small fields in her past two starts since a colic attack, leaving Laurie contemplating her immediate plans.
He will let the dust settle on Treasurethe Moment’s second to Globe ($8.50), who controlled the tempo in the four-horse race, with a likely small Cox Plate field a concerning factor.

“We have got two weeks to decide, but we would have loved to have been winning today,” a disappointed Laurie said.
“I haven’t really been super happy about tackling small fields … she would appreciate horses to be tackled up front and pressure applied and then she is standing up, but whether she is going quite as good, we’ll have to wait and see,
“I mean she has had a bit of an ordeal (since the colic attack following her devastating Memsie Stakes win).
“Whether she felt at her best, I am not sure. All I can say is that we had her here in good order. We will see how she pulls up and then make a call.
(We have) a few options – you play on, you change your sights or we are giving her a holiday.”

• What the jockeys said: 2024 Might And Power Stakes
Laurie’s choices, should he bypass the Cox Plate, could be the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on November 1 or a spell to give the four-year-old a break before another autumn campaign.
Jockey Damian Lane said he felt the four-year-old mare “had the race won at the 600m.”
However, he said Treasurethe Moment failed to show the acceleration that took her to three consecutive Group 1 victories as part of a nine-race winning streak.

“I just had to bide my time and go when it was right, and then upon straightening I was beaten. She really laboured late, which was really unlike her.
“Normally when she travels that strong she really quickens, so first thoughts are disappointing without dissecting the race, going through the sectionals and everything like that, but I would expect at her best she’d go past Globe.”
