Former Queensland jockey Julie Murphy has died after being stung by a wasp in her own backyard.

Murphy spent nearly two decades riding thoroughbreds but died last week after the freak encounter with the insect days earlier.

The 56-year-old’s death has triggered an outpouring of tributes from the racing community who have been left shocked by the incident.

Murphy’s career spanned nearly two decades, during which she rode across Queensland, including as far north as Cairns and down to the Gold Coast, New South Wales, and Victoria, accumulating 69 wins.

Her last race ride was in 2013 at Beaudesert.

Throughout her career, Murphy worked closely with several stables, notably the Peter Moncrieff barn, where she was a trusted rider for many years.

While deaths from wasp stings are rare, this devastating incident has shocked the racing community.

Friends remember Murphy for her hardworking nature, kind personality and passion and dedication to the sport.

It’s understood support is being provided to Murphy’s family and friends by the Queensland Racing Industry Support Program.
