Mabel Park SHS will be forced to go through the Langer Trophy qualifying rounds after succumbing to Marsden SHS 20-10 in a heated local derby tonight at Marsden.
While Marsden SHS’s late season resurrection continued courtesy of the four tries to two victory, the result could not elevate the side into the finals after Wavell SHS and Redcliffe SHS played out a thrilling 20-all draw just hours earlier.

Remarkably the Langer finals will now be minus a Logan City presence, with the rugby league hotbed district without representation from either sixth placed Marsden or seventh placed Mabel.
It was a Taylan To’a special which elevated Marsden to higher ground 14 minutes from full-time that helped Marsden over the line.
To’a’s wonderful left side run to score carried Marsden out to a 20-10 advantage after Marsden prop Levi Rusin had raised the stakes with a sensational front rower’s try just after halftime.
But Rusin went from a hero to a villain when he was sin-binned for 10 minutes midway through the second half after a fierce front-on shoulder charge on Mabel winger Cole Finter.
Finter was down for the count for several minutes before walking from the field, assisted by trainers.
Importantly Marsden’s defence held during Rusin’s absence and the game was safe.
Earlier, the first half swung wildly in one direction, and then the other.
Mabel Park SHS opened the scoring with a superb hot potato try, with the ball moving right and then left through seven pairs of hands before finishing in the hands of Majer Peachey who barrelled over.
Marsden’s response was quick and clinical, with a rushing left side moving magnificently finished by winger Mairangiatea Walker after textbook led up from Caleb Cresswell, Hayden Watson and Adaquix Watts-Luke.
Both teams then scored from bombs and it was 10-all at halftime.
Marsden SHS v Mabel Park SHS (Walters Cup)
Mabel Park SHS confirmed its place in the semi-finals with a 28-10 win over Marsden in the Walters Cup.
Mabel Park SHS led 12-nil at halftime and expanded their lead to 28-nil before Marsden fullback Toetu Misipati Toetu and hooker Xavier Kahika-Cherrington each scored fabulous individual tries.
Mabel Park’s first half advantage was built on defence which was complemented by hulking prop Tyler Harry surging over the line with a barn door breaking charge. It was 6-nil.
Then that man Tristan Ford-Walters burned the Marsden marker defence with a dart to score from dummy half and his five-eight, Aileone Mikaio, had earned a restart with a delicate chip kick.
Ford-Walters was lethal off the back of quick ruck ball, while his No. 13 Ezekiel Filipi was also exceptional throughout.

PREVIEW
A resurgent Marsden SHS will field a Year 10 student signed by South Sydney in its must win match against Mabel Park on Thursday.
Diezel Guillonta-McCarthy Brandt-Hamilton will play half a game in the Walters Cup and then come onto the bench for the Langer Trophy senior side in a game which Marsden must win to have any chance of making the semi-finals.
The clash will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV as part of a double header with the Walters Cup from 3.15pm.
Guillonta is an impressive lock forward, who made his Langer Trophy debut off the bench in Round 6, and will again be used as an interchange strike player.
A Year 10 student, Guillonta was snapped up by South Sydney across last summer after impressing during a train and trial opportunity.
Guillonta also played Harold Matthews junior representative games for Souths earlier this year and helped the Bunnies reach the semi-finals.
Guillonta will play against another South Sydney signing, Mabel Park SHS centre Sean Tauaa, who will be rushed onto a development contract this off-season.
The signing of both Guillonta and Tauaa highlight how active South Sydney scouts are in south east Queensland as the club looks to inject elite youth talent into the club.
Mabel Park’s finals dream was cut short on Tuesday night after Ipswich powered past the winless Stretton SC.
That Ipswich win has also made Marsden’s road to the finals tougher.
Marsden must beat Mabel Park by more than six points, then rely on Redcliffe SHS to lose to Wavell later on Thursday afternoon to secure their spot in the finals.
A Wavell loss could also open the door for Marsden to sneak in, but they would need to overturn Wavell’s 56-point for-and-against advantage which is a difficult ask.
Marsden’s late-season recovery has come on the back of the return of key players like Hayden Watson and Taylan To’a, and the fact Marsden has been able to finish games with a fit 17 and full use of its interchange bench.
