Two-time Indigenous All Stars representative Sarah Field will turn out for the CQ Capras in the 2023 BMD Premiership.

The 23-year-old, who played her club football with Emu Park, is part of a large Central Queensland contingent in the 24-member squad.

She comes to the club after a standout 2022 season with the North Queensland Gold Stars, who claimed the title with a last-gasp win over the Capras in the grand final.

Coach Amanda Ohl said five-eighth Field had slotted in well, and her ability and experience were benefitting every member of the squad.

“She’s really good at sticking to a structure and she has a great understanding of the game,” she said.

“She has the ability to ‘see and do’; that is, if she sees something she will pull the trigger on it.

“Attack-wise, she will add a bit more spice to our game with her creativity and vision and defensively, she is very strong and loves to tackle.”

The Capras will again be captained by two-time NRLW premiership winner and 2022 BMD Premiership Player of the Year Mariah Storch.

The other squad members are Shauna Barnham, Reeghyn Beardmore, Gemma Brennan, Naomi Clayton, Kelli Dunlop, Tahnee Holt, Layne Ivey, Ihndara McLeod, Tamika Olive, Tylah Phillips, Mackenzie Reid, Kirby Richardson, Courtney Robinson, Mikayla Roe, Tarni Smith, Bree Spreadborough, Ta Steere, Peyton Storch, Krystal Sulter, Pania Tane, Sharni Upton and Lillian Yarrow.

Ohl said it was exciting to have so much Central Queensland talent in the line-up, and there were also a number of players in the club’s under-19 ranks who would be pushing for selection.

“It’s great to be developing a lot of local girls and it’s only going to help the Rockhampton Rugby League get stronger,” she said.

“The players who don’t make the Capras side will be taking what they have learned back to their teams in club land.

The Capras are gearing up for their pre-season trial games - the first against Souths Logan Magpies in Brisbane this Saturday and the Mackay Cutters in Mackay the following weekend.

Ohl said that with some starting positions still undecided, the squad members had plenty to play for.

“This will be a great opportunity for some of these girls to play themselves into a position,” Ohl said.

“We still have spots up for grabs still have spots up for grabs and these two trials will ultimately decide who plays where.”

The Capras will host the Tweed Seagulls in their season opener at Rockhampton’s Browne Park on March 11.
