Zac Lomax’s surprise code switch: Ex-Eels star makes appearance for Kiama Cavaliers in local fourth grade
It’s the code switch nobody saw coming, with former NRL star Zac Lomax picking up the bat and ball for his local fourth grade cricket side as he weighs up his next career move.
Rugby league, UFC, rugby union and now Zac Lomax has a new sport…cricket.
The former Dragons and Eels star took 3-38 and scored an unbeaten 50 playing fourth grade for the Kiama Cavaliers Cricket Club on Saturday.
His 50 came off just 34 balls and included 42 runs in boundaries.
Lomax quit rugby league this year and appears ready to join either Western Force or ACT Brumbies for next season’s Super Rugby competition.
This masthead has also been told multiple NRL clubs have made discreet inquiries about whether Lomax would want to play rugby league again and if he could secure a release from Parramatta, a club where he was contracted at until the end of 2028.
Lomax hasn’t indicated whether he would seek to play in the NRL again.
Any desire Lomax held to join R360 collapsed after the rebel competition was delayed for two years.
Lomax left Parramatta after one year before sparring with UFC fighters while he planned a defection to rugby union.
Now Lomax has shown he is also adept at cricket.
The ex-NSW State of Origin winger starred with bat and ball at Kiama’s Bonaira Oval in what will probably be a one-off appearance.
The Kiama Cavaliers Facebook page read: “Batting first, the Jets started strongly before Zac Lomax, on club debut, tore through the top order, entering the attack at first change and finishing with 3-38 from six overs.
“Openers Zac Lomax and Harry McCrone (then) strode to the crease and got straight to work.
“Zac was the first to retire at 50 not out in the ninth over, belting six fours and three sixes from 34 balls.”
Young McCrone also posted a half-century, the mandatory retirement score.
Lomax appeared in a team photo with his Kiama teammates, who won the game with three balls to spare. Kiama’s fourth grade is a father-and-son side with locals claiming Lomax was “very accommodating.”
This masthead understands Lomax has significant overseas interest from rugby union.
It is understood Lomax is also pondering a stint in Super Rugby with hopes of securing selection in Australia’s 2027 World Cup squad.
He would sign a Rugby Australia contract by playing Super Rugby.
More Coverage
Lomax’s contract in Super Rugby would only be around $200,000 a season but his wage would spike with Wallaby selection.
He spent two days visiting the Western Force’s facilities in Perth earlier this month while also heavily linked to the Brumbies.
Lomax has told friends he was ready for a career change having played rugby league all his life.
