AFL 2023: Latest intel, contract status and verdict on every Port Adelaide listed player
Three opposition players have requested trades to Port this off seaosn, so who makes way on the Power list? Every player’s list status revealed.
After a straight-set exits there will be plenty of tough questions asked at Port Adelaide.
Outside Alberton already people are asking are the Power a better side than at the time of its 2021 preliminary final smashing and can Ken Hinkley’s side go from a contender to a flag winner next year.
The majority of the Power’s list is locked away for 2024, while key defenders Esava Ratugolea, Brandon Zerk-Thatcher and ruckman Jordon Sweet have all told their respective clubs they want to move to Alberton.
So who does this leave in danger? And who will be key for the Power going forward as Port Adelaide tries to respond to the semi-final loss to GWS and the fan anger directed towards the club.
1. TOM JONAS
Age: 32, Games: 216, Contract Ends: Out of contract
The Power captain announced his retirement before the finals after he had a season in which he was out of the side and in the SANFL. A calf injury suffered before the qualifying final meant he had to watch on as the Power crashed out in straight sets and his career ended. Would be a surprise if he is in footy next year given his interests and ventures outside of the game.
Status: Retired
2. SAM POWELL-PEPPER
Age: 25, Games: 139, Contract ends: 2025
The Power’s barometer, Powell-Pepper has carved out an important role in Port’s forward line. Signed a new contract earlier this year.
Status: Staying
3. RYAN BURTON
Age: 26, Games: 139, Contract ends: 2025
A strange year for the talented defender. Was dropped from the side on a couple of occasions. Struggled against Toby Greene in the semi-final, a week after keeping Charlie Cameron to just two goals. Will be looking to bounce back in 2024.
Status: Staying
4. TODD MARSHALL
Age: 24, Games: 97, Contract ends: 2024
Didn’t reach the heights of 2022 but still an important part of Port Adelaide’s forward line. A favourite of Hinkley’s, the re-signing of Marshall will be a priority for the Power next year.
Status: Staying
5. DAN HOUSTON
Age: 26, Games: 146, Contract ends: 2027
Had his best ever season and was named an All-Australian. Signed a long-term deal last year, so isn’t going anywhere. Does he get elevated into Port’s leadership group in 2024?
Status: Staying
6. KANE FARRELL
Age: 24, Games: 71, Contract ends: 2025
Has become a damaging defender, although there are those who still think he is best on a wing. Signed a new contract recently.
Status: Staying
7. XAVIER DUURSMA
Age: 23, Games: 73, Contract ends: 2024
A disappointing season for Duursma through a lack of form and injury, which has seen him go from the third musketeer among the Power’s young stars to one many think Port should look at trading. The Power’s list management have told him and his manager that the club wants to keep him. Next season looms as a huge one for the wingman.
Status: Staying
8. JOSH SINN
Age: 20, Games: 4, Contract ends: 2025
The Power rate Sinn, as evident by the move to trade up for him on draft night, but he just has been injured often throughout his time at Alberton. If he is fit then he could be one to watch in 2024 and an option to fix the Power’s wing issues.
Status: Staying
9. ZAK BUTTERS
Age: 23, Games: 93, Contract ends: 2024
Had an incredible season in which he elevated himself into one of the best midfielders in the competition with All-Australian selection and a Brownlow Medal chance. Still has room to grow which is scary. Will be getting a big payday in 2024.
Status: Staying
10. TRAVIS BOAK
Age: 35, Games: 348, Contract ends: Out of contract
The big watch when it comes to Port Adelaide’s list decisions. The Power’s AFL games record holder and former captain wants to stay and says talks have been positive in his exit meeting. He has to weigh up whether he goes again in 2024 but is at risk of being just a squad player and potentially lining up in the SANFL. The Power will need to navigate this one delicately with fans ready to rage if Boak is forced out.
Status: Up in the air
11. JEREMY FINLAYSON
Age: 27, Games: 108, Contract ends: 2024
Dropped from the 22 for the semi-final after a quiet end to the season but Finlayson was the Power’s leading goalkicker and played an important role in chopping out in the ruck. Still an important player for Port Adelaide.
Status: Staying
12. TRENT MCKENZIE
Age: 31, Games: 165, Contract ends: 2024
Has bravely battled with and recovered quickly from injuries in 2023. Did sign a new one-year contract but looms as being one who could get squeezed out of the 22 if the Power can strike deals for Esava Ratugolea and Brandon Zerk-Thatcher.
Status: Staying
13. ORAZIO FANTASIA
Age: 28, Games: 99, Contract ends: Out of contract
Played just three AFL games as he again battled injuries. Needed to get a run of games and prove his body was right to get a new deal and while he didn’t get back into the Power’s side he said after his exit meeting that he was confident there would be something that keeps him at Alberton in 2024.
Status: Increasingly likely to stay
14. MILES BERGMAN
Age: 21, Games: 57, Contract ends: 2025
Looked likely to return to Victoria but in a big boost for the Power he signed a new two-year contract. Is set to blossom as a star for the Power after showing his versatility in defence, being able to play as a hybrid, in addition to his previous role on the wing. Does want to go into the midfield at some point.
Status: Staying
15. WILLIE RIOLI
Age: 28, Games: 70, Contract ends: 2026
His second half of the season showed why the Power were so desperate to get him from West Coast. Is probably going to be the man to provide the x-factor in the Power’s forward line.
Status: Staying
16. OLLIE WINES
Age: 28, Games: 228, Contract ends: 2026
After the Power’s semi-final exit, Wines himself labelled 2023 as the worst season of his AFL career. His pre-season was interrupted by injury, and he has had to play a different role on the wing but the drop-off from his 2021 Brownlow Medal winning year has been stark. Often captain with Jonas out of the side, the Power will need to make a decision about where Wines plays in the team with his best footy as an inside midfielder and whether he is full-time captain in 2024.
Status: Staying
17. TOM CLUREY
Age: 29, Games: 124, Contract ends: 2025
Just the one game at AFL level in Round 3, before Clurey was dropped and then his season was ended early with a back injury. Has fallen down the pecking order for the Power in defence and set to fall further should Port land its targets. Is normally linked with moves away from Alberton.
Status: Likely to stay
18. JASON HORNE-FRANCIS
Age: 20, Games: 41, Contract ends: 2028
The Power gave up a bit to get the No. 1 pick, just a year after he was drafted by North Melbourne and he looks to be worth every cent. Needs to get more touches of the footy and had a challenging period where he was targeted by rival fans, but Horne-Francis is set to be a star for the Power for years to come.
Status: Staying
19. MITCH GEORGIADES
Age: 21, Games: 49, Contract ends: 2027
Another young player from interstate the Power were able to convince to stay. Before he went down with an ACL injury Georgiades was in the SANFL and the Power will be looking for him to bounce back once fully recovered. Do Port Adelaide look at the high-flyer on a wing?
Status: Staying
20. CONNOR ROZEE
Age: 23, Games: 106, Contract ends: 2024
Backed up his breakout year with another All-Australian selection as Rozee established himself as an elite midfielder. Like Butters is in line for a huge payday in 2024 with the two to be the Power’s biggest priorities from a list perspective. Has emerged as a genuine option to be Port’s next captain despite not being officially in the leadership group this year.
Status: Staying
21. ALIIR ALIIR
Age: 29, Games: 131, Contract ends: 2024
After a down 2023 was back in form in 2024. Has taken the oppositions most damaging key forward. Additions down back could help him regain some of his intercept game.
Status: Staying
22. CHARLIE DIXON
Age: 32, Games: 203, Contract ends: 2024
Consistently dealt with injuries this year and looked underdone in the semi-final. The Power will be praying the off-season gives his body time to recover. Signed a one-year deal recently, it could be his last.
Status: Staying
23. DYLAN WILLIAMS
Age: 22, Games: 22, Contract ends: 2025
Probably the real find of Port Adelaide’s season. After being delisted with a year to go on his contract and then re-rookied, Williams was able to break into the Power’s team in his new role as a defender. And he seriously impressed, enough to get a new two-year contract.
Status: Staying
24. JAKE PASINI
Age: 22, Games: 0, Contract ends: 2024
The Power rate the key defender highly, but he is still waiting on an AFL debut. If this is still the case come the end of 2024 then he might be worried.
Status: Staying
25. SAM HAYES
Age: 24, Games: 11, Contract ends: Out of contract
Returned to the Power’s side when injury again hit the ruck stocks, but it looks likely the Round 24 game against Richmond – which he was subbed out of – will be his last. Good with his tap work, the Power have questions about his ability to get around the ground. Had a garbage bag full of stuff as he left Alberton on Monday.
Status: Likely to leave
26. RILEY BONNER
Age: 26, Games: 93, Contract ends: Out of contract
The Power announced he would not be offered a contract for 2024. Too good for the SANFL, but just hasn’t been able to carve out a regular spot in the AFL team.
Status: Delisted
27. BRYNN TEAKLE
Age: 23, Games: 6, Contract ends: Out of contract
Played four games at AFL level this year, before going down with injury. The Power have announced that the 2022 mid-season draftee won’t get another contract.
Status: Delisted
28. WILLEM DREW
Age: 24, Games: 81, Contract ends: 2024
Continues to impress in his role as a tagger for the Power and has carved out an important role in the midfield. Will get a new contract next year.
Status: Staying
29. SCOTT LYCETT
Age: 30, Games: 146, Contract ends: Out of contract
Has the option to stay at Alberton but has plenty to weigh up including how his body is faring and whether he wants to stay or go. Did perform well when in the side for the Power before his latest knee injury. The Power are on the hunt for ruckmen.
Status: Up in the air
30. OLLIE LORD
Age: 21, Games: 13, Contract ends: 2024
Debuted and broke into the Power side in 2023 with Port’s injury issues with its key forwards. Kicked four goals in the qualifying final loss to Brisbane. The Power rate Lord highly.
Status: Staying
31. FRANCIS EVANS
Age: 22, Games: 17, Contract ends: 2024
After being delisted by Geelong, Evans found his way to the Power and showed promising signs as a small forward. He was a bit in and out of the side, perhaps unluckily on occasion.
Status: Staying
32. TOM SCULLY
Age: 18, Games: 0, Contract ends: 2024
The young key forward showed some promising signs in pre-season and is a long term prospect for the Power.
Status: Staying
33. DARCY BYRNE-JONES
Age: 27, Games: 173, Contract ends: 2026
The Power vice-captain has been changed into a pressure forward, just a couple of years after being an All-Australian defender. It will be interesting to see whether he remains there in 2023.
Status: Staying
34. LACHIE JONES
Age: 21, Games: 35, Contract ends: 2024
Had a good season for the Power, emerging as a solid defender who can play both smaller and taller. The Power will be pleased with his development.
Status: Staying
36. JASE BURGOYNE
Age: 20, Games: 13, Contract ends: 2025
Signed a new contract only weeks ago. Has played just the five games for the Power this year after some impressive games in his debut season so will be looking for a big 2024.
Status: Staying
37. TOM MCCALLUM
Age: 19, Games: 0, Contract ends: 2024
The Power’s first pick of the 2022 draft did not taste any AFL action. Port Adelaide view him as one to develop so expect him to do more of that in the SANFL next year.
Status: Staying
38. DANTE VISENTINI
Age: 20, Games: 3, Contract ends: 2025
The Power rate the young ruckman highly and he was able to make his debut this year as Port’s ruck stocks were again hit hard. The Power will try and get in at least one ruckman in the trade period but Visentini looms as Port’s eventual No. 1
Status: Staying
39. HUGH JACKSON
Age: 20, Games: 0, Contract ends: Out of contract
The midfielder has agreed to a two-year contract extension on the back of a promising SANFL campaign. Although yet to make his AFL debut, Jackson was named as an emergency during the year and could break into the side in 2024. His debut season, in 2022, was ruined by a hip issue.
Status: Staying
40. KYLE MARSHALL
Age: 19, Games: 0, Contract ends: 2024
Another project key defender. Marshall will be in the SANFL team in 2024.
Status: Staying
41. JED MCENTEE
Age: 22, Games: 32, Contract ends: 2025
Not the flashiest player on the Power’s list but the coaches love the pressure he gives as a forward. Re-signed late in the season.
Status: Staying
43. TRENT DUMONT
Age: 28, Games: 121, Contract ends: Out of contract
Did not play an AFL game in his second year at the Power after joining the club from North Melbourne. The former Roos vice-captain has not been offered a contract for 2024.
Status: Delisted
44. JACKSON MEAD
Age: 21, Games: 18, Contract ends: 2024
Was in extremely strong in the SANFL, getting in the Advertiser SANFL Team of the Year but featured at AFL level just seven times. Clubs might ask the question about the father-son but he still has a year on his contract at Alberton.
Status: Likely to stay
45. NATHAN BARKLA
Age: 19, Games: 0, Contract ends: Out of contract
The Power announced that the Next Generation Academy product won’t get a new contract. Played 15 games in the SANFL in his only year at Alberton.
Status: Delisted
47. QUINTON NARKLE
More Coverage
Age: 25, Games: 44, Contract ends: 2024
The mid-season draftee has agreed to a 12-month contract extension. Narkle kicked four goals in three games for the Power after joining the club from Richmond’s VFL side in May. The 25-year-old forward/midfielder could not break into Port’s AFL team late in the season, getting overlooked after the round 17 home win against Gold Coast.
