The Tasmania Devils are locked and loaded for their AFL debut in 2028 after league boss Andrew Dillon confirmed the AFL’s 19th team would hit the field as planned despite Macquarie Point Stadium being behind schedule.

Earlier, the Mercury reported the AFL had relaxed its line that there would be no team if there was no stadium, but today it maintained its mantra of “no stadium, no team” as the state government continues its campaign to get the Macquarie Point venue off the ground.

“There has been no change to the conditions contracted for a 19th AFL team licence in Tasmania which includes the commitment of a 23,000-seat, roofed stadium at Macquarie Point.” Brian Walsh, AFL Executive General Manager Corporate Affairs, Government & Communications told the Mercury

But Dillon was personally assured in Tasmania the stadium build was in the works and that it would eventually take shape.

“I was down in Tasmania last week and met with the premier and other people via Stadiums Tasmania and they are in the middle of quite a complex planning process,” he said.

“But at the moment everything is on track for Tassie to join the competition in 2028.

“There will be more to come on that later in the year.”
