BFL 2024: Torquay defeat Geelong Amateur by 62 points
Torquay has shown no signs of slowing down in 2024 with an emphatic win over an in-form rival but must now wait on news of two key players’ status after both went down with injuries.
Torquay has scored its biggest win of the season against an in-form rival but is counting the cost of injury with two key players now in doubt.
The Tigers remained the only undefeated team in the Bellarine league after a 62-point drubbing of Geelong Amateur at Queens Park Reserve, but lost spearhead Lucas Anderson (knee) and former AFL-listed Charlie Ham (hamstring) to injuries before halftime.
Torquay premiership coach Dom Gleeson said Anderson and Ham would both get scans this week.
“Charlie only got back last week, so to see him go down again (was tough) but he’s positive,” Gleeson said.
“Our medical staff said let's not risk it this week and try and push him so we might get him back next week.
“Lucas will just be a day-by-day thing and wait until we get results but it didn’t look good at the time. He’s a tough customer and I know he’ll play if available but thoughts are with him and fingers and toes crossed.”
Gleeson indicated the Tigers would look at their depth if they needed to cover either Anderson and Ham, with the club’s reserves also undefeated.
The Tigers worked into their top-of-the-table clash against the Ammos, who had started the year 3-0 but were without Jai Sheehan along with star recruit Tom Gribble for a second week.
“We knew it was going to be a bit of a grind, and I don’t think the scoreboard suggests how good they actually are,” Gleeson said of the Ammos.
Up by 18 points at half time, the Tigers found their footing in the third, kicking five goals to two, with a similar widening of the margin in the fourth.
“We reset in the second half and tweaked a couple things around our offence,” Gleeson said.
“The group I have... they just respond so well every time they’re questioned.”
One change saw “Mr Fix It” Weylin Doyle move up forward, where he finished with a game-high four goals.
“He’s just got this uncanny knack to win the ball in his area,” Gleeson said of Doyle.

The Tigers face another top-two clash in round 5 when they head to Anglesea (3-1), with Gleeson confident his group relished the challenge.
“It’s always a tough tussle down there on what is usually a pretty fast deck,” Gleeson said.
“Going by the wins and losses, they’re (Anglesea) going to be one of the sides to beat and hopefully they’re full-strength and we can go down there and put our best foot forward.”
