The region’s best young female cricketers will take to the field for the first time in the annual CQ Intercity Carnival.

The CQ Girls Invitational under-13s and under-15s will be among 21 junior teams in action this weekend.

Games will be played at four different centres, with the under-11s in Biloela, the under-12s in Emerald, under-14s in Gladstone and under-16s in Rockhampton.

Queensland Cricket’s Central Queensland coaching and talent specialist Zoe Eisenmenger said the carnival would be a fantastic opportunity for the girls to showcase their talent.

“I think the boys will be a bit surprised by them but at the same time it will be a good challenge for a lot of the girls,” she said.

“We’ve now got a full Queensland Country pathway from 13s to 15s to open women.

“It’s really good that these younger girls aren’t seeing a dead end anymore, they’re going, ‘Okay, I can make it to the top level by staying in my region’.
