Geelong United Supercats recruit Matt McCarthy stars with 45 points across the weekend’s double header
A prized Geelong United recruit has done the business for his new team, netting 45 points and just shy of 20 rebounds over a big double header weekend.
It was a split weekend for both men and women as the Geelong United Supercats teams went 1-1 in the first of four rounds of double header games.
The teams travelled over the border to South Australia on Friday night to take on the Mt Gambier Pioneers.
And the Supercats women’s team struggled to find scoring options with Chantel Horvat away on Opals duties for the FIBA Asia Cup, recording just 59 points to the Pioneers’ 94 in a big loss.
Eve Braslis was the leading scorer for Geelong with 16 points, while Agnieska Skobel and Sarah Elsworthy each added 12 points.
Returning home to the Geelong Arena on Sunday afternoon, they were able to bounce back with an emphatic 103-64 win over Eltham — the Wildcats also missing star player Annali Maley to Opals duties.
Leading by 18 at halftime, the Supercats never looked in doubt, holding Eltham to just three points in the first five minutes of the final term and just 11 points for the whole quarter.
Skobel was outstanding for Geelong on Sunday with 26 points, five rebounds, five steals and three assists, while Braslis and Ella Tofaeono each recorded a double double with 24 points and 11 rebounds and 23 points and 15 rebounds respectively.
It was a closer contest for the men in both games, going down to Mt Gambier on Friday night by 10 points, the final score 100-90.
New recruit Matt McCarthy showed what he is capable of when not in foul trouble, finishing with 25 points and 11 rebounds to lead the scoring for Geelong.
Gabe Hadley also added a double double for the game with 22 points, 12 rebounds and five assists.
Sunday afternoon saw the Supercats turn it around against the Eltham Wildcats, trailing until scores were tied up at the final break.
