Queensland swimmer Lani Pallister has rallied in the wake of a serious fall suffered by her godmother and Australian swimming icon Dawn Fraser to deliver a pair of silver medals at the 2024 World Aquatics Short Course Championships.

The Olympic gold medallist broke the Australian record in the 400m freestyle, but still fell short of defending her 2022 crown against Canada’s Summer McIntosh.

McIntosh smashed the world record by over a second with a blistering 3:50.25 swim in Budapest.

Pallister also joined Meg Harris, Milla Jansen and Alexandria Perkins for the 4x100m women’s freestyle relay where Australia won silver behind the United States.

Pallister trains out of Griffith University on the Gold Coast and is based in Alexandra Headland on the Sunshine Coast.

Her medal triumphs came just days after the 22-year-old’s godmother, Dawn Fraser, was rushed to hospital after she sustained broken ribs and a fractured hip in a fall on her Sunshine Coast driveway.

Fraser is now “up walking”, but in the aftermath of the incident 22-year-old Lani and mother Janelle – who is also with the Australian team at the short course championships in Hungary as a coach – issued a statement sharing their “deep heartfelt concern”.

“Hearing about her fall has been both stressful and frightening, given the relationship we share,” the pair said.

“Dawn is not just an extraordinary athlete and icon, she is an incredibly special part of our life and her wellbeing is always in our thoughts, regardless of any injury or illness she may face.

“We are relieved to hear that she is doing well and is receiving the care she needs from her family and the hospital staff.”

The short course championships run until December 15, and Pallister will also be in action in the 100m, 200m, and 800m freestyle events.
