With top eight hopes now all but dashed for Manly, focus switches to Des Hasler’s future as the Sea Eagles take on a finals-bound Cronulla at home.

Sea Eagles v Sharks preview

The heat has turned up on Manly after a 44-24 loss to cellar dweller Gold Coast last Sunday. It was a shocking way to essentially end the 2022 season, three weeks before finals.

“Let’s not beat around the bush, we were poor today,” Hasler said following the loss.

Getting worse for the Sea Eagles, lionheart Jake Trbojevic was ruled out for the rest of the season early in the week with a broken hand. Then news broke on Thursday that Reuben Garrick - who was replacing Jake’s brother Turbo Tom at the back - was also out for the remainder of the campaign among 13 unavailable.

The Sharks have also lost rookie fullback Kade Dykes on the eve of the match.

Since the ‘pride jersey’ controversy that dominated headlines late last month, the Sea Eagles have not won, with Sunday extending the losing streak to four in a row. They currently sit four points outside the top eight and need to win every game, hope Canberra lose two of three and the Roosters do not win another match this season.

Des Hasler’s employment is now very much up in the air and he may need every win he can get to keep his job, given speculation around his future prior to Sunday’s loss.

Even for the most avid Manly fan, that seems an impossible scenario. Cronulla, on the other hand, are vying for a top two finish.

With Manly, Bulldogs and the Newcastle Knights left to play the draw is very favourable to achieving that goal.

In a blow, rampaging prop Toby Rudolf adds to the Cronulla Sharks’ injury list hurting his knee against the Wests Tigers in Tamworth last weekend.

However, Matt Moylan has been named to make a timely return three weeks out from finals. While, Siosifa Talakai (shoulder) and Connor Tracey (concussion) were pushing to make the side, but only the latter made it.

Manly centre Morgan Harper is earned a reprieve in the backline following last week’s shemozzle. Talakai tore Manly’s right side to shreds in a blistering first half to establish a 32-nil lead that would end 34-22 in the Shire.

Jason Saab joins Trbojevic on the injury list.

Both Talakai and Ronaldo Mulitalo scored doubles in that first half.

History between Sea Eagles v Sharks

Manly may be under siege but Cronulla’s record against the Sea Eagles is appalling. The Sharks have beaten Saturday’s hosts just four times since March 2008. Three of those came at Shark Park and one in Gosford.

Cronulla’s last win in Brookvale was 16-10, 15 March, 2008.
