Leaked R360 contract: NRLW star Jess Sergis latest high profile player targeted by rebel rugby competition
R360 is expanding its search for talent as the rebel competition braces for mass withdrawals from rugby union players - and the NRL and NRLW are in its crosshairs. LEAKED CONTRACT
Newcastle try-scorer Dom Young and Parramatta flyer Josh Addo-Carr have become the latest players to field interest from R360 as the rebel competition braces for mass withdrawals from rugby union players intent on playing at next year’s World Cup.
Revelations of an approach to the two wingers comes as the NRL explores legal action over the prospect of handing life bans to any players or agents who become involved with the breakaway competition.
Sports Confidential understands that Young and Addo-Carr were approached in the past 24 hours as R360 braces for a playing backlash after rugby union federations from around the globe threatened to freeze out players who link with the concept.
Rugby union players who join R360 will be locked out of next year’s World Cup and the Olympic Games. The fear now is that R360 will look to fill the void by approaching more NRL players.
This masthead has been told that initial contact has been made with Addo-Carr and Young - the former has one year remaining on his deal with the Eels while Young is contracted with the Knights until the end of 2027.
It also comes as this masthead provides the first look at the R360 contract that threatens to strip rugby league of some of its biggest names.
Sport Confidential has obtained the six-page short-form contract that was sent from R360 to player agents recently as the rebel rugby union competition attempts to lock in players for its inaugural season, which is scheduled to kick off on October 2 next year.
Some of rugby league’s biggest names have been linked with the nascent competition including Melbourne fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen, Brisbane forward Payne Haas and Parramatta winger Zac Lomax.
South Sydney fullback Jye Gray, Sydney Roosters NRLW star Jessica Sergis and Storm forward Nelson Asofa-Solomona are also on R360’s radar. It is understood the breakaway competition has locked in enough players to launch a six-team competition next year.
The next step is to get those players to sign formal contracts. Sport Confidential can reveal intricate details of the contracting system that R360 will use.
The players’ obligations include a commitment to be available for a maximum of 16 games each season and that their “image rights (name, image, likeness signature etc) will be made available to the company and/or the franchise but the player shall remain entitled to enter into boot related contracts”.
R360 or one of its franchises will take responsibility for arranging and paying all travel, relocation and work permits required to represent their team.
It adds that R360 will provide the player with training facilities, professional coaching and training services, and the opportunity to be trained and coached to enable the player to maintain his form, health and fitness.
R360 will also cover the cost of accommodation during pre-season training and official matches, the cost of travel for immediate family members to attend two events each year, and an allowance for the player to carry out his duties.
The contract also includes a section for payment, notably in US dollars. Despite major rugby unions, including Australia, promising to ban any player signing with rebel competition R360 from Test rugby and the Olympics, terms of the contract state “the player will be released for any international duty, in accordance with World Rugby Regulation 9”.
FLASHBACK
There was good news for the Raiders on this day five years ago. With the competition heading deep into October because of Covid-19, the Raiders ended the Roosters’ hopes of a three premierships in a row with Canberra winning 22-18 in the second week of the finals. The match doubled as Sonny Bill Williams’ last in the NRL.
SUPER LEAGUE COACH STILL EYEING NRL MOVE
Hull KR boss Willie Peters is preparing for the Super League grand final this weekend but he also has one eye on the NRL as well as his upcoming role on Kevin Walters’ coaching staff for the Ashes series.
Peters, crowned Super League coach of the year this week, is a busy man. Listen to those in the know and they will tell you he is an NRL coach-in-waiting.
If he has his way, the wait won’t be much longer. Peters can do no more given Hull KR has become a powerhouse on his watch.
“I’ve done it all slowly,” Peters told Sport Confidential.
“Basically I started in the under 16s and then went up to 18s and 20s. It was always a question of are you ready, are you ready.
“I would only take that next step when I thought I was. I’m really enjoying myself here. I love working with the group that I’ve got.
“If an opportunity presents itself down the track, I’d love to coach in the NRL. But it’s got to be the right time. I love coaching mate, I love challenges and I love footy.
“So yeah, I’m ready.”
Once this weekend is done and dusted - hopefully with Hull KR lifting the trophy - Peters will turn his attention to helping Walters and the Kangaroos win the Ashes series.
His experience in Super League will be invaluable given the bulk of the England side will come from the competition.
“I’ve never really me Kev before but just having chats with him, I’m really looking forward to supporting him,” Peters said.
“Seeing him on TV and hearing him, he’s just a good fella. You want that first - to work with someone that’s a good bloke.
“He’s been really understanding of where we’re at at the moment. - just focus on the (Super League grand final) and we’ll be ready to go.
“To be part of the Australian team, it is pretty cool. It is a great opportunity. Over here, the buildup has been massive.”
SOUTHS STAR SET FOR SUPER LEAGUE MOVE
South Sydney’s Siliva Havili has become the latest NRL star to sign up to be part of the Darren Lockyer-led revolution at the London Broncos.
Sport Confidential can reveal that Havili will join Gold Coast prop Reagan Campbell-Gillard at the Broncos next season, having been convinced to be part of the project by Lockyer and his business partner Grant Wechsel.
Lockyer and Wechsel will find out next week whether London have been successful in their bid to return to Super League next season.
Campbell-Gillard and Havili have agreed to be part of the side next season regardless, meaning they may go from the NRL to the second-tier championship in England.
“For London fans, the arrival of Havili is not just about one player,” Wechsel said.
“It highlights the momentum of a recruitment program we believe delivers Super League quality rugby league to the capital.
“We want to inspire a new generation of supporters and re-establish the Broncos as a destination club.”
Havili played more than 170 games in the NRL for the Warriors, St George Illawarra, Canberra and the Rabbitohs. He has also played 21 Tests for Tonga and one game for New Zealand.
Lockyer and Wechsel were at Rugby League Central earlier this week as the Australian side was named for the upcoming Ashes Tour.
The pair were there for a meeting with ARL Commission chair Peter V’landys and NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo to share their plans for London and attempt to get a gauge on whether the NRL was still interested in being involved with Super League.
PANTHER SET TO HIT FREE AGENCY
Penrith premiership forward Liam Henry looks set to hit the open market on November 1. Henry, a fixture in the Panthers forward pack in recent seasons, is yet to field an offer from the Panthers with the clock ticking down until he enters the final year of his deal.
The 24-year-old is set to be in hot demand if the Panthers can’t lock him up in the next three weeks. He isn’t the only Panthers premiership winner set to be up for grabs on November 1.
Lindsay Smith, Luke Garner and Scott Sorensen are also about to enter the final year of their deals. Sorensen has been linked with a move to Perth and the Bears are also likely to take an interest in Henry should he be available.
TIGERS STARS ATTEND TEAMMATES’ GRADUATION
A host of Tigers players were on hand to help young gun Heamasi Makasini celebrate his year 12 graduation.
Fresh from making his NRL debut, Makasini’s teammates including Sunia Turuva and Jeral Skelton were among the Tigers to watch Makasini graduate from Newington College recently.
Makasini played his first NRL game in round 27 while in year 12. He has been earmarked to crack a regular NRL spot next season at the club.
TITANS FACE BATTLE TO KEEP RISING STAR
Gold Coast faces a fight to keep Cooper Bai - the son of Storm cult figure Marcus Bai - after it emerged that the Sydney Roosters and Melbourne were keeping an eye on the teenage forward.
Bai, who made his first grade debut in the final round of the regular season, has another year remaining on his deal with the Titans.
Gold Coast are keen to extend him but they won’t have it all their own way after it emerged that he had captured the attention of rivals.
